How To Stop Snoring and Sleep Apnoea
Our StopSnoring programme is taught by Patrick McKeown, and includes a breathing technique developed by specialists to prevent snoring and sleep apnoea without the need for invasive procedures or medication.
Based on over 11,000 clients, estimates from the 2010 BIBH survey suggest that breathing retraining using the Buteyko Method show significant improvement in sleep for >95 percent of clients with sleep apnoea who undertook Buteyko Training courses.
Our StopSnoring program incorporates the Buteyko breathing technique to open the upper airways and quieten breathing volume towards normal to encourage deeper sleep and calmer breathing.
People who snore breathe loudly and heavily which translates into over-breathing and an excessive breathing volume. Snoring occurs when a large volume of air is breathed through narrow airways, resulting in the vibration of respiratory structures at the back of the throat, causing noisy, inefficient breathing.
Normal breathing volume for a healthy individual should be around six litres of air per minute, but for someone who snores and suffers from sleep apnoea, this volume can be as much as 15 litres per minute, more than double what is necessary. (1)
The aim of the StopSnoring programme is to create new, healthier breathing habits which promote a reduced breathing volume and strengthen the upper airways. When breathing is naturally calm and quiet, snoring and sleep apnoea stop without any side effects or the need for medication and invasive procedures. Our promise is to show you how to stop snoring and experience quieter, calmer and deeper sleep with improved daytime energy levels, productivity and concentration.
Our StopSnoring course is based on the work of the late Russian Dr Konstantin Buteyko whose techniques are specifically designed to unblock the nose and correct breathing volume towards normal. In collaboration with the University of Limerick, Patrick McKeown was the instructor in a clinical study investigating the Buteyko Method as a treatment for rhinitis in asthma. Results showed a 70% reduction of nasal symptoms in participants, including snoring, loss of smell, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose.
The benefits from our StopSnoring programme are long-lasting and provide a huge benefit to overall health in addition to correcting sleep-disordered breathing such as snoring and apnoea. Exercises are simple, easy to incorporate into your way of life, and have no side effects. Eliminate snoring and improve your sleep by attending a StopSnoring clinic.
Thousands of people have attended Patrick McKeown’s clinics, read his books, and viewed his online videos to successfully resolve a wide number of breathing issues including snoring, sleep apnoea, asthma, rhinitis and more.
Over time, snoring can lead to the development of obstructive sleep apnoea, an often dangerous condition which prevents the flow of air to and from the lungs during sleep. As a result of this overly heavy breathing, the walls of the airways collapse and the sleeper unconsciously holds their breath. This effect usually wakes the individual up, causing poor sleep and, in some cases, severely reducing oxygen delivery to the brain.
The symptoms of snoring and sleep apnoea include:
- Daytime fatigue
- Poor concentration
- Anxiety
- Lethargy
- Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning
- Needing to use the bathroom regularly throughout the night
- A dry mouth in the morning
- Restless sleep
- Clumsiness
- Regular yawning or sighing
- An increased risk of car accidents
- Cardiovascular problems
