Snoring worsens with age, gender, obesity, alcohol intake, cigarette smoking and nasal obstruction. It can be distressing and harmful to sleep for both sufferer and sleeping partner. Snoring occurs when a large amount of air passes through the upper airways, traumatising the soft palate, nose or throat. There are two contributory factors including dysfunctional breathing patterns and/or obstruction in the upper airways.
Would persons still snore if their breathing was calm and quiet? Our Snoring and Sleep apnoea Ireland program in Cork, is specifically designed to calm and quieten breathing volume towards normal. With calmer and lighter breathing during sleep, snoring and sleep apnoea significantly reduces.
Breathing gently through their nose during sleep is a key factor in experiencing a deep and undisturbed sleep.
Conversely, noisy breathing during sleep contributes to a number of symptoms including snoring and sleep apnoea, as well as an increased need to visit the bathroom during the night.
Snoring can occur regardless of whether the person breathes through their nose or mouth. Heavy breathing causes vibrations in the upper airways resulting in snoring. It is vital to breathe through the nose only, and change breathing volume towards normal levels. Then snoring will significantly reduce and sleep quality improves.
While it is important to consider airway size when addressing snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, it is also vitally important to consider breathing volume. Buteyko breathing exercises as taught at our sleep clinics in Cork are specifically intended to change breathing volume towards normal, and are an effective adjunct to the treatment of snoring and sleep apnoea.
